Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget

The Ed Lorenzen Fiscal Internship (Summer Only)

Now accepting applications for Summer 2021.

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget is a bipartisan, non-profit organization committed to educating lawmakers and the public about issues that have significant fiscal policy impact. We are made up of some of the nation’s leading budget experts including many of the past Chairmen and Directors of the Congressional Budget Committees, the Congressional Budget Office, the Office of Management and Budget, the Government Accountability Office, and the Federal Reserve Board.

This summer, the Committee is looking for a talented student or recent graduate to become the inaugural intern in our new Ed Lorenzen Fiscal Internship program. The late Ed Lorenzen was more than just a former colleague, Hill staffer, and budget wonk; he was a tireless public servant who was respected by both parties because of his knowledge of and passion for fiscal policy and the legislative process. Affectionately known as Captain PAYGO due to his role in passage of the Statutory Pay-As-You-Go Act of 2010, Ed never lost sight of the need for the government to support the most vulnerable while ensuring fiscal sustainability for future generations.

The ideal applicant will have a passion for public service, interest in budget policy, and a commitment to the principles of fiscal responsibility. This internship will offer a unique opportunity to gain valuable work experience while cultivating a better understanding of Congress and the budget process. As part of this internship, the Fiscal Intern will:

  • Support the Committee’s Legislative and Policy teams daily with research on taxes, spending, health care, Social Security, and other budgetary matters;
  • Participate in meetings with leading budget experts and groups;
  • Contribute to policy publications, papers, press releases, policy explainers, and op-eds;
  • Attend hearings on Capitol Hill;
  • Attend DC-area events related to fiscal and budget policy; and
  • Support the rest of the Committee staff with tasks as needed.

The Ed Lorenzen Fiscal Internship is a full-time, paid position at the Committee’s office in Washington, DC. The intern will work jointly with our Policy and Legislative teams on a variety of budget-related projects. The intern will walk away from the internship with a deep familiarity with the federal budget and policymaking process as well as a published piece on our website reflecting on their experience at the Committee.

The Ed Lorenzen Fiscal Internship is made possible by generous contributions from the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, Tim Pagliara, Barry Anderson, Carol Cox Wait, and Alan Simpson.
